Dating advice

Dear First Kiss:

I'm new to online dating and have made contact with a man who seems very nice.  We have been talking for a month now and he's ready to meet!  I'm scared; what should I do?

Dear Barb:

Don't panic!  Every day new people are looking to the internet to meet new friends.  Some have been around the block and others, like you, are brand new to the whole game.

First of all, realize that everyone has a "first time."  It's always a little scary, but exhilarating, to go on a blind date.

Secondly, decide when YOU'RE ready to meet.  If you just don't feel comfortable yet, don't do it.  The time will come when you'll feel confident about putting a real face to the internet person you're smitten with.

Thirdly, pick an easy, neutral spot.  Agree to meet for a cup of coffee, or a quick drink at happy hour.  Don't lock yourself in for hours.  If you both want to extend the date, fine.  But leave yourself an "out."

Fourth, let someone know where you're going and who you're going with.  Between everyone we know who's dated on the internet, we've met TONS of people, and all proved to be perfectly nice, decent folks.  None of us has encountered a scary creep.  However, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Fifth, pick an outfit you love and feel great in.  If you know you look hot, you'll exude confidence and as everyone knows, confidence is sexy.

Sixth, go dutch.  It's the first meeting.  This way, no one feels any obligation toward the other if there's no possibility of a second meeting.

Seventh, be open minded.  If Mr. Witty and Smart on the internet comes across as a dullard in real life, realize that he may be nervous and scared too.

Eighth, have fun and enjoy the adventure! :)

Wishing you lots of Kisses,
Jennifer & John
